Australia

General Info: Australia is a popular destination for South Africans looking to relocate, mainly due to the similarities in culture and climate between the two countries. At present, approximately 19 million people live and work in Australia, situated predominantly along the south and eastern coastlines. It was recently determined that about 60,000 South Africans live in Perth, approximately one tenth the city's population.

The national currency is the Australian Dollar (A$) with the economy functioning very much on a first world basis. A national public healthcare system, Medicare, ensure that basic and primary healthcare is generally free to Australian citizens and permanent residents. The primary language is English, with a host of minority languages, such as Afrikaans, recognized and respected in their academic community.

Primary and secondary education is free and mandatory for all citizens and permanent residents of school going age, with pre-primary and tertiary education requiring private contributions.

Regional Opportunities: Australia comprises 8 state or territory governments, each with a specific Skills Shortage List of occupations that their region needs. The national government also publishes a Migrant Occupations in Demand List of occupations of high or critical shortage. The national Skills Occupation List itemizes all vocations that Australia requires or recognizes.

In our experience, certain trades and professional occupations such as medical practitioners and accountants, are highly sought after vocations.

Visa Opportunities: The most common means of a relocation visa to Australia is the Skilled Independent application for Permanent Residence. This points-based system requires an applicant be aged 44 years or younger in order to apply and gain points thereon, along with points for nominated occupation, relevant work experience (at least 3 out of 4 years recent experience), spousal skills and English speaking capability. Extra points can be claimed for:

a) a high English ability – dependant upon the applicant scoring the required IELTS (International English Language Testing System) result;

b) close relations in the country,

c) Occupation in Demand and /or job offer

d) Partner skills

e) A Bachelors degree in a community language such as Afrikaans, for example.

f) Australian qualifications.

Alternative residence applications also include the State/Territory Sponsored (permanent residence), State Sponsored Regional (provisional) and Business Owner visas. Aged parents, spouses and family visas are also made available to eligible candidates – plus many more options.

Canada

General Info: Canada is the second largest country in terms of land mass after the Russian Federation, however it has only about 30 million citizens and permanent residents. Canada is closely linked to the United Kingdom and Queen Elizabeth II is the constitutional head, with a parliamentary system of federal governance based in Ottawa, the capitol city.

A member of the elite G8 economic club of nations, Canada is a wealthy neighbour of the United States and has enjoyed respected status as a peacekeeper, participant in the United Nations and strong supporter of human rights and global economic development. It is important to draw a distinction between Canada and the US, for the Canadians do not see themselves as Americans and enjoy a vastly different culture to the US.

The national currency is the Canadian Dollar (Ca$) and is only slightly less valuable than the US$. The Canadian economy is first rate, with heavy industrialized and commercial activity around the main cities. Medical care, primary and secondary education is free for citizens and permanent residents and Canada as a strong social security system.

Regional Opportunities: Canada comprises 10 provinces and 2 territories. Each province has a programme of encouraging skilled immigration to meet their specific needs. In our recent experience, medical professionals, mining engineers and certain trades have enjoyed popularity. Many South Africans choose to migrate to Vancouver on the west coast in the province of British Columbia, with approximately 60,000 South Africans living on Victoria Island alone. Commercial activity, whilst closely linked with the US economy, enjoys growing independence and this can be seen in a recent upswing of job opportunities in major centres.

Visa Opportunities: The Skilled Worker category allows individuals who have recent work experience, settlement funds and suitable qualifications to apply for permanent residence in Canada. Although there is no working age limit, points are deducted for each year over 49. Points are awarded for qualification, age, language, work experience, spousal skill and extra points for a job offer and close relations in Canada. The Canadian migration policy is undergoing significant changes. The Canadian government are trying to ensure that skilled applicants with qualifications in demand get to Canada sooner than they did under the old migration policy. This could mean that certain applicants obtain permanent residence within 12 to 24 months, instead of the current 48+ months processing time.
Other visa categories include spousal, family, business visas and student visas.

New Zealand

General Info: New Zealand remains one of the most popular destinations for relocation and an obvious second to applicants either not keen on, or failing to make it into, Australia. This by no means makes NZ a lesser choice. For many people who have made the successful migration there, NZ offers a tranquil and neighbourly environment wherein to raise a family.

About 4.5 million people live and work in New Zealand, spread across the industrial North and agricultural South Islands. Renowned for its sheep farming, some 54 million sheep are kept, ensuring low domestic prices for mutton! NZ contributes a staggering 16% of the global specialized agricultural product and its temperate climate and breathtaking topography have spawned an unlikely industry in supporting motion pictures with specialized locations and backdrops (think Lord of The Rings).

The national currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$). A significant shift in governmental policy towards economic development has steered NZ towards a market and export driven economy, where competitive manufacturing has placed NZ high in the global rankings. With a relatively small population, and a high GDP investment in free public healthcare and education, have made New Zealand the envy of many nations worldwide.

Regional Opportunities: As NZ is divided into two parts, the North island has become the center of commercial and industrial development, with Auckland as the urban hub. The South island is host to most of the agricultural industry and enjoys the higher annual rainfall. NZ publishes a Skills Shortage List of occupations in demand for certain areas.

Visa Opportunities: The principal means of application for permanent residence in New Zealand is under the Skilled Migrant Category, a points-based system requiring at least a 3-year national diploma, bachelors degree or trade certificate, relevant work experience and an acceptable level of English. The applicant must be aged less than 55 years at the time of application. Points are awarded for age, qualification, work experience and extra points are given for spousal skill, higher qualifications, occupation in demand and an upfront job offer.

Other visa categories include the sibling, spousal, business visas and family quota visas.

The United Kingdom

General Info: The United Kingdom, and in particular Britain, enjoys close relations with many of its English speaking former colonies, such as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. This, via the Commonwealth, has led to a variety of visa an immigration opportunities over the past 20 years.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Some 54 million people live on the tiny island comprising Britain, Wales, Scotland and a section of territory in Northern Ireland. The UK drive much of the economic developments of the European Union, of which it is part and as such, many EU passport holders are able to enter and work in the UK.

The national currency is the British Pound Sterling (£) and to date is the world's most powerful currency, surpassing even the US Dollar.

Regional Opportunities: As the land mass of the UK is fairly small, much of the career opportunities are to be found around major cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, etc. A current push is underway to provide rural and smaller counties and towns with skilled workers.

Visa Opportunities: The United Kingdom has recently overhauled their entire migration process and criteria for the routes to permanent residence in this country have been radically altered.

The United States

General Info: The USA is the world's last great superpower, with a powerful economy and military complex ruled by the most entrenched and longest running democratic government. Built over the past 300 years on immigration from Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, the US is by far the world in one country. Some 290 million people call it home.

Recent history, however, has made America an unpopular nation with radical fundamentalists and terrorists worldwide, and the September 11th attacks in 2001 have forced the US to both tighten border security and make visitation and immigration that much more difficult.

The national currency is the United States Dollar (US$) and this has been traditionally the currency of choice for economies the world-over to either mimic or trade in with other nations. The US economy creates a millionaire every minute and with all this prosperity, comes great demand on social services and desire for those wanting to enter America.

Regional Opportunities:
The USA comprises 50 states, each with their own needs and legislative autonomy. Opportunities vary from oil in Texas to Steel in Michigan, Finance in New York to Motion Pictures in California.

Visa Opportunities:
The USA has about 160 visa categories, however the most common means of temporary residence is the H1-B, or Speciality Worker visa. Herein you must have a skill or experience that local resident workers don't, thereby meeting the needs of an American employer who'll have to gain US Department of Labour certification for the job offer. An alternative is the L-1 visa for business executives whose parent companies are based outside the US, with subsidiaries in the US – such a visa allows for an Executive Transfer.

Although many others exist, permanent residence and the elusive "Green Card" are unobtainable until temporary residence of at least 4 years has occurred, and then only when US Immigration are satisfied with the individual applicant.
